Williamstown, Mass.- The Husson University softball team (21-15) lost to Western New England Golden Bears (25-17) by the final score of 6-5 in 11 innings in Game 4 of the Williamstown Regional in the NCAA Softball Tournament at Cole Field at the campus of Williams College on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The Eagles’ softball season comes to a close.

How it Happened:

Top of the 1st Inning: Western New England jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) hit a 2-run RBI-double to score Mallory Donelan (Mineola, N.Y.) and Jenn Luba (Plymouth, Conn.).

Bottom of the 2nd Inning: The Eagles cut the lead in half as Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine) hits an RBI-single to score Madelyn Fowler (East Barre, Vt.) and make it 2-1 WNE.

Top of the 4th Inning: The Golden Bears extended their lead to 3-1 as Donelan hit a single to left field to score Sydney Pounds (Milford, Mass.).

Top of the 5th Inning: Western New England added a run as Carlie Moss (Delmar, N.Y.) doubled to right field and Cassidy Howe (North Andover, Mass.) scored to make it 4-1.

Bottom of the 5th: The Eagles responded thanks to Cunningham with an RBI-single to shortstop as Paige Veilleux-Adams (Winslow, Maine) and Fowler scored to make it 4-3 WNE.

Bottom of the 6th: The Eagles tied the game before being suspended for darkness as Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine) singled through the right side and Bri Brochu (Pittston, Maine) scored. The game was then suspended due to darkness then resumed in the morning. The Golden Bears got out of the jam as the game remain tied at four after six innings of play.

Top of the 11th Inning: The Golden Bears scored the winning runs in the fourth extra inning as Donelan singled up the middle followed by an RBI-double by Luba to score Donelan and make it 5-4. Luba scored as Kistner grounded out to right field and made it 6-4.

Bottom of the 11th: The Eagles got a run back as Cunningham doubled to left centerfield and Caitlin Bean(Ellsworth, Maine) scored but the Golden Bears held on to a 6-5 victory.

Batters: Husson

  • Cunningham with four RBI and three hits.

  • Smith with three hits and an RBI.

  • Fowler with three hits and two runs scored.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Olivia Smith pitched 0.2 innings, allowed two runs on four hits, and walked a batter.

  • Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) (L, 16-9) pitched 10.1 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on ten hits, struck out six, and walked two.

Batters: Western New England

  • Kistner with three RBI and three hits.

  • Donelan with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.

  • Luba with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Pitchers: Western New England

  • Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) pitched five innings, allowed three runs on eight hits, struck out three, and walked a batter.

  • Aimee Kistner (W, 11-6) pitched six innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out four, and walked two batters.

The Eagles softball season has come to a close as the NAC Conference champions finish with a 21-15 record.

Notes: The game was the longest game in Husson’s NCAA era and the first 11 inning game since 1999.
