HOWLAND — Leine McKechnie recorded eight strikeouts as the Penobscot Valley Howlers shut out the Katahdin Cougars 20-0 in a Class D North softball semifinal on Friday.

Second-ranked PVHS advanced to the Class D North regional final set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coffin Field in Brewer.

The Howlers will take on the winner of a Saturday semifinal between No. 4 Ashland and No. 1 Southern Aroostook.

Morgan Banks paced the PVHS offense with three singles, knocking in three runs while Kortney McKechnie roped two doubles good for six RBIs. Lexi Ireland added a double and single as PVHS improved to 18-0.

Leanne Fitzpatrick, Hannah Drew, and Emma McNally all singled for 12-4 Katahdin, the third seed.
