AMHERST, Mass. – A late first half and late second half goal proved to be the difference makers as UMass handed the UMaine women’s soccer team a 2-0 loss Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead on Lauren Bonavita’s goal at the 36:59 mark of the first half. Jenny Hipp was credited with the assist. UMaine’s (0-1-0) two shots on goal and two corner kicks in the first half were defended perfectly by the UMass defense. The Black Bears trailed 1-0 at the half. UMaine tried to mount a second half comeback, but the UMass defense stood tall. Olivia and Hannah Bamford saw each of their second half shots sail over the crossbar. The Minutewomen added another late goal. This time Paige Kozlowski was the goal scorer as the scoreboard read 81:46. She received a pass from Alexandra Schafer from the right flank and beat Annalena Kriebisch, the UMaine goalkeeper. Despite a few corners and shots, the Black Bears were unfortunately unable to find the back of net. Shots/Keepers The Minutewomen held a 10-to-2 advantage in shots on goal, while also winning the corner kick battle, 4-3. Keeper Kriebisch made eight saves in goal for UMaine, while her UMass counterpart, Peyton Ryan, made two. Up Next The Black Bears will travel to the University of Vermont for two neutral site games. UMaine battles Marist on Friday, August 24, while facing off against Saint Mary’s College of California on Saturday, August 26.
