AUBURN,N.Y. — The Swarthmore College Garnet scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 6-6 tie and defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-6 Saturday evening in Game 11 of the NCAA Division III New York Regional at Falcon Park.

The victory kept the Garnet unbeaten in the tournament and moves them into the championship round needing one win to take the regional title and go to the Division III College World Series.  The Huskies suffered their first loss of the tournament and will need to win three more games to take the title.

Sunday’s games have Baldwin Wallace University taking on host and top seed SUNY Cortland at noon.  The winner of the that game will play Southern Maine, scheduled for 3:30, with the winner advancing to the final round against Swarthmore.  Pending results, the championship round could start Sunday evening (only if Southern Maine advances), or Monday (if either Baldwin Wallace or Cortland advance).

Sophomore AJ Liu (Plano, Texas) opened the Garnet eighth being hit by a pitch from USM junior closer Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee).  Junior Charles Levitt (Minneapolis, Minn.) lined a triple past a diving USM outfielder to score Liu and snap the tie.  Sophomore Cole Beeker (Lexington, N.C.) lashed a single inside first base to plate Levitt.  Beeker moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a fly ball to the outfield, and scored on a single through the drawn in infield by junior Jared Gillen(Stilwell, Kan.).

Sophomore reliever Jack Corkery (Washington, D.C.) gave up a one-out walk in the ninth, but got the next batter to bounce into a game-ending double play to clinch the win.

Southern Maine got the early jump taking a 4-1 lead.  The Huskies took advantage of two infield errors in the second inning to score an unearned run, and made it 2-0 in the third on junior Devin Warren‘s (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) sacrifice fly.

Levitt got the Garnet on the board in the home half of the third with an RBI single to bring home senior Matt Palmer (Ashville, N.C.).

The Huskies increased their advantage to 4-1 in the fourth on an RBI ground out from junior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and an RBI single from sophomore Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine).

The Garnet came right back in their half with back-to-back home runs from Gillen and rookie Coleson Hebble (Coconut Grove, Fla.) off USM sophomore starter Gage Feeney(Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy).

Swarthmore took its first lead of the night in the fifth against USM sophomore reliever Colton Lawrence (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Dexter.  Liu, who reached base four times in the game, led off the inning with a single and took second on an outfield error.  He moved to third on Levitt’s grounder to first, and scored on Beeker’s single down the right field line.  A single from junior Jackson Roberts (Piedmont, Calif.) ended Lawrence’s turn on the hill and brought on Dexter.  A single by Conor Elliott (Charlotte, N.C.) loaded the bases.  Gillen struck out on a pitch over everyone for a wild pitch allowing Beeker to score from third making it 6-4.

The Huskies rallied for two runs in the seventh to tie the game.  Quintal was hit by a pitch with one out.  Singles from Hillier and Dexter brought in Quintal, and junior Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) made it three straight hits to load the bases.  Sophomore Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Hillier and tie the score.

Corkery (4-1) picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work.  He did not allow a hit and surrendered only one walk while striking out two.  Dexter (4-4) worked 3 2/3 innings giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks.  He struck out three.

Swarthmore outhit Southern Maine 14-9 in the game with six players having two hits apiece.  Hillier and Dexter had two hits apiece for the Huskies.
